Eating in the Frunchroom

It may not be on Chicago Magazine’s list of Top 40 Chicago Words, but if you’re from the South Side of Chicago odds are that you know what a “frunchroom” is. It’s the same whether you spell it with an ‘o’ (“fronchroom”) or with a ‘u’, like the new restaurant up in Portage Park, Frunchroom.

I came across this restaurant via a Chicago Eater article that highlighted it before opening. My brother and I decided to visit during the opening weekend for brunch.

Frunchroom is on the smaller side. They have counter seating along the front window, long bench seating along one wall with five tables (a mix seating 2 or 4), and four other tables (seating up to 3) along the other wall. It’s a tight but cozy space and what it may lack in size, the food makes up for in deliciousness and the service in friendliness.

I was in the mood for some comfort food and I had my eye on the grilled cheese sandwich since reading the description in their online menu: “raclette, pickles, french onion.” That to me sounded excellent… and it was! The raclette cheese was oh so melty and gooey and the french onion topping really took it to the next level. I need to mention that I got it with fries, which was a good move, because they were both cooked and seasoned perfectly. My only slip up was that I should have also chosen the “add bacon” option. Next time!

The staff there were really friendly, which added to the cozy feel of the place. One might say it was just like you were eating in their frunchroom. I recommend you give this place a try. I know I’ll be back as there are definitely more menu items I’d like to try, especially their house made charcuterie items.
